Mochtar Apin (1923 – 1994) was an Indonesian painter.

He was co-founder of the Gelanggang Seniman Muda (Arena of Independent Artists) movement in Jarkarta in 1946 and a member of the Bandung School. Alongside other painters, intellectuals and poets, he advocated a universalist ideal for culture, advocating the creation of art concerns that could communicate to people of all backgrounds. Mochtar was well travelled and for seven years of his life, from 1951 to 1959, he took the initiative to journey around Europe looking at art and visiting museums. With such knowledge, Mochtar was well equipped to debate on the role of art in Indonesia.

Senirupawan, born in Bukittinggi, Padang Panjang, West Sumatra, December 23, 1923 and died in London, January 1, 1994. A son of a railway employee. He got a broad education, which in 1948 tried a bachelor's degree in literature at the University of Indonesia, Jakarta. Although gifted in poetry as well as writing, painting became his passion while he was still in school (1939-1940). Art graduated ITB, Bandung (1951), Arts and Kria, Amsterdam (1952), Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Art, Paris (1957), and the Deutsche Akademie der Kunste, Berlin (Germany) in 1958. Under Japanese rule, like so many artists of her relatives, she worked at the Cultural Center. In 1946 he was active as an editor of a journal, the Archipelago, and in 1947 he worked for the periodical Development and Gema atmosphere, while also producing illustrations for publishing governmental organization, Civic Library. With the establishment of School of Fine Art in London in 1948, discovered by Admiral Apin, its first director, and became a close friend and student of Ries Mulder, Dutch painter and teacher utarna in Bandung. In 1951 he went to Holland on a scholarship from STICUSA where he worked and exhibited for two years. In 1953, he went to Paris to study for four years at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts, spent quite a lot on graphic arts and photography.
Working pretty much on free art and photography. While working and traveling abroad, he was hired to paint a mural in the building of the Indonesian Embassy in Paris. In Germany he was decorating an Indonesian restaurant in Dusseldorf with a mural. In May 1958 Mochtar Apin back to Indonesia, joined the faculty at the Bandung Institute of Technology as one of the leading art teachers. In 1966 he was head of the Department of Graphic Arts.
